I LOVE seeing families return year after year, and always look forward to this sweet family.  This was our fourth year in a row to get these girls in front of my camera, and they didn’t disappoint!  The light was perfect, the weather was mild, and the clothes as gorgeous as always.  This year we were able to shoot at their home (which, I believe, they started building the first year we worked together!), and it was stunning.

I have the best job EVER!

We’ve had some amazing new clients this year as a result of the big D Magazine win, and I am having a ball with all these fresh new faces!

The families that have older children have obviously (hopefully!) had photographers in the past…and in the case of Aidan and Nolan, we needed to make sure Caleb had photographs to match his older brothers’ ‘baby on black’.  So I dug out my backdrop (kidding-I actually purchased a new one because it’s been a) THAT long since I’ve used it, and b) I moved a few months ago and still can’t find my winter coats. The trusty old backdrop is now in the bowels of my attic, garage, or storage unit (or probably hanging out with my winter coats)).

So we plunked this adorable ball of happiness on the backdrop and clicked away, then plunked him right in the laps of his brothers and snagged some fun sibling images as bonus.

Also, these boys have the cutest parents EVER. I could have sat and chatted with them for hours. I *love* meeting new people (I’m sort of a chatterbox…shocker, I’m sure ;) )

We have a TON of new blog entries to upload! I am so very, very behind in blogging (which is sort of good, because that means I’m rocking the editing of whole sessions and we are making a bunch of Sugar families very happy this weekend!).

We are also still booking holiday sessions! Typically we stop around this time of year with any sessions that need to be back in time for holiday gifts or cards…but this year we are saying yes and squeezing everyone in that we can! (which MAY be why I’m so behind ;) )  Let us know if we can save you a spot!!!

Miguel + William {highland park children’s photographer}

Each year our families come back for another round of Sugar, and Miguel and William have brightened each fall with their big eyes, mops of hair, and (let’s just be honest) attempt to off the other sibling at least once each year.

Last year the older (Miguel) pushed the younger (William) off of a stump. I may never quit kicking myself for putting the camera down to rescue instead of clicking away for posterity.  Because their mom is the awesome, I could have gotten away with documentation instead of preservation.

Last year she brought me a bottle of wine and a much needed hug.

This year we chatted our way through their session, laughing at the antics of her boys and reminiscing over prior shoots and the mishaps that seem to always occur.  We were happy to wrap this one up unscathed, without bandaids, allergic reactions, or serious injuries of any kind.

This year we had us some good, old fashioned girl talk and two very handsome boys…the a little brother who *I THINK* was trying to pay his brother back for last week’s shove off the stump (just take a peek at that last image).

Next year should be epic. I have a feeling…

It sort of feels wrong to start a blog post with a black and white image. Don’t ask me why…color is my medium of choice (much to the chagrin of my son who is forever standing at my elbow and encouraging “Make it black and white! DO IT!”. If I had an editor, he would be it. WITH GREAT PLEASURE.).

And he would be pleased with the image I’m selecting to lead this sneak peek with. The rest? *SCREAMED* color…and fun, and happiness, and everything that a family session should be.

But the first…there’s just something about a family interacting and loving each other that deserves to be black and white. Love it.

If you haven’t yet, throw some leaves this Fall…All of you.  It’s a wondrous thing.

There is a cold, hard reality behind photographing children.

Are you ready?

This is big.

Lean in.

{whispering}…Not every child laughs and smiles and is happy.

I KNOW that’s how it looks. I do.  But sadly, this is real life. And the kids you see on this blog have the grumpies just as much as yours do. PROMISE.

The key is rolling with it, digging deep into years of experience as a mommy of three (who are rarely ALL happy at any given time, particularly in front of a camera), and promising to meet the grouchy kids’ rockstar mom for a glass of wine to celebrate a session that ended up ROCKING.  I seriously think we high-fived each other in the parking lot ;)

See? Look…grouchy. less grouchy. RUN! fun. MORE FUN.  That’s the anatomy of a grouchy-kid session.

Works every darn time ;)

And…BINGO.

This one wasn’t grouchy, in the slightest. Except at the end when we were finished and she wanted to keep! going! more! pictures!  Love her.

This is my favorite. Now to get MY trio to cooperate like this.  Hmmm…
