Best in Big D

At the risk of going all Sally Field on you guys, here’s a giant shout-out to all of you that voted! THANK YOU!

‘cuz guess what…WE WON!

We won not JUST Readers’ Choice, but Editor’s Pick as well.  And because being nominated was an honor in and of itself, I’m still not quite able to put into words what winning BOTH categories means.

So just…thank you. From the bottom of my heart, for every one of you that has supported, encouraged, cheered and pushed me to be creative and the best I could be.

For our clients of the past six years, who picked us before we were cool and stood by us these past, bumpy-at-best years.

And for my oldest child, who asked “Mommy? Are you the BEST photographer in the WHOLE WORLD?”…when I answered “No…but a lot of people voted us best in Dallas!”, your “Oh, well, sorry about that.” is about all I could possibly ask for where keeping it real is concerned.

So, from my oldest, and from her siblings, from Mindy and myself, we thank you ALL.  We may not be ‘best in the whole world’, but D Magazine fills that void nicely.

Now let’s get ready for some SERIOUS eye candy as we hit our 2011 holiday season head-on.

Dallas just got a whole lot sweeter.

Let’s do this.

Adoption Sunday

Three years ago our Adoption Sunday sessions were born while I waited for the arrival and placement of my youngest.  She arrived, and while baby and toddler juggling made way to navigating life as a single parent, it has waited patiently for resurrection.

We have photographed families from every type of adoption, from domestic to international, open, closed and semi-open, same sex families, single parents and foster-to-adopt along with special needs.  We’ve tried to cover every country, and our sessions have taken place on the West Coast, here in Dallas, and in two weeks we’ll be in Boston. It’s been a huge project, and we’re excited to be nearing completion.

But first, we need a little help.

We need families that have adopted from the countries listed below. If you know of anyone that fits, PLEASE forward this blog post and spread the word!

We’ll be shooting in Boston July 22-24 to give those living on the East Coast a chance to participate.  Of course, Dallas sessions for these families can occur anytime, so don’t be shy!

If you’d like to participate, please drop us an email at

These sessions are at no cost to these adoptive families.  Through these, we hope to celebrate the beauty of every type of adoption and the love that creates a family.

Have camera, will travel!  What’s easier (and less expensive!) than flying your family to Dallas for a Sugar shoot? We love to travel (look for an announcement on Adoption Sunday sessions coming to Boston soon!). Bonus: Your kids don’t lose their routine, you don’t have that exhausted “I just slept in a hotel bed with my kids wedged up under my armpits and do you even KNOW what time they woke up this morning?” look that I know so well, AND you don’t have to pack an entirely different suitcase for your outfits for our shoot. Have camera, will travel, AND I dig in closets.

These boys happen to have a closet loaded with Mini Boden (swoon), a backyard to die for (double swoon), and did I mention their English accents?  It’s a good thing there wasn’t a video camera present at our session, or you’d all get to hear me butcher their accent (time and time again).  I was brilliant (not really). But hey, I entertained myself, the boys were adorable, and we ended up with some amazing images, so I *think* their dad will forgive me ;)

The littlest one, Ali, had an infectious laugh that I just could NOT get enough of. What an ice breaker!

Look at him!

I have to admit I *did* pull out my phone after our session and asked him to do the “Charlie bit me” thing…but the little bugger has spent enough time in the states that he said it more American than my own kids.

This one, Mr Jakob, with his shaggy hair and easy grin, is about as GQ as they come.

And then there’s Josh. A mini-me of his dad (and a perfect gentleman to boot).

This trio of boys is led by their father, who was brave enough to fly to England the day after our shoot (and I hear they arrived in one piece, though he had the type of little-boys-vomiting-in-rental-cars-and-airports experience would turn even the most seasoned of parenting veterans grey.  I promised this blog post on Tuesday…and we’ll be generous and say I mean HIS time instead of ours ;)

Just a quick self-portrait that I snapped while figuring out the light in their backyard. It was a true oasis in the desert of El Paso.

Arturo + Oliver {dallas childrens photographer}

I have such a soft spot for playful parents. Give me a mom or dad that will eschew worries about wrinkles or mud and toss a kid on his (or in this case, her) back and just have FUN with their kiddo? LOVE LOVE LOVE (and have to force myself to not use my entire card on just that moment). THESE are the moments that kids want to look back on…interacting with their parents, playing with their siblings, being a kid.

Our session with Arturo and Oliver was exactly that. Laid back parents (though to be honest, I think we are blessed to have such a steady stream of easy going peeps to work with), absolutely gorgeous, happy kids, and the only agenda was to have fun and be natural. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the results!

Someone *really* adores his big brother, can you tell? ;)

And probably my absolute favorite from this whole session…the one that made me giggle AS I pressed the shutter…I give you Mr Arturo (AKA The Ladys’ Man) HUBBA HUBBA:

Luke + Caroline {dallas childrens photographer}

The word of the day/week/month/summer is “BEHIND”…as in this session is WAY overdue on the blog (along with several others that will be posted over the next few days). Life as a mom to 3 awesome (but active (and, in the case of my youngest, destructive)) kids that are home full-time for the summer is a challenge. Add selling our house (and keeping it show-ready, can I get an ‘Amen!’ for everyone that has done that with kids!) while juggling it all as a single mom? Well, that’s my excuse. It’s not exciting, but *shrug* there it is. THANKFULLY, I get to escape the chaos and play with other peoples’ kiddos, and when work is your salvation? You know you’ve got a pretty sweet life (no pun intended ;) ).

So here are Luke and Caroline…twins that *just* turned 3 (and have the t-shirts to prove it). You gotta love a mom that accessorizes with rainboots!!

These kids are as wild and rambunctious as any pair of 3 year olds, but their sweet side? Delicious to watch unfold.

They were just the right amount of sassy, too. It doesn’t get more swoon-worthy than this (work it, Caroline!):
